About the Awards
Mō ngā Tohu
Since 2014, the Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards have been shining a light on teaching best practice by schools, kura and early learning services across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Ko ngā Tohu Kairangi Mātauranga a te Pirimia he whakamāramatanga o ngā mahi rangatira ā ngā kura auraki, ngā kura kaupapa Māori, ngā kōhanga, me ngā wāhi ako puta noa i Aotearoa.
The Awards focus on the work of groups, teams and partnerships in English, Māori, or Pacific-medium settings. They highlight the combined effort needed to achieve improvement, equity and planned innovation. The Awards are judged by a twelve-member judging panel independent of the Ministry of Education.
The Awards comprise four categories: Excellence in Engaging; Excellence in Leading; Excellence in Teaching and Learning; and Excellence in Wellbeing Education. The best overall entry amongst these four category winners is chosen as the Prime Minister’s Supreme Award winner. Categories for the Awards represent the dimensions of quality for an education system in any country. Our world-renowned Best Evidence Synthesis has shown that they are critical to the quality.
In addition, the Education Focus Prize recognises an area of particular education focus, and changes each year.
